As climbers, we often talk about the physical and mental challenges of the sport, but there’s another aspect that makes climbing so special: the community. Wherever you are in the world, the climbing community has a way of welcoming you in and making you feel at home, whether you’re scaling limestone cliffs in a foreign country, tackling gym problems in a new city, or reconnecting with old friends during the holidays. To me, climbing gyms are like the Walmarts of the climbing community – a place that is familiar when you are somewhere new. Different, but similar. No matter where you are, you can feel welcome in the community in the climbing world.
Climbing in Portugal
Recently, I had the chance to travel to Portugal—a place known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and, of course, its climbing. My friend and I were wanting to check out a local climbing gym – a rainy day activity. Walking in, I felt the familiar hum of chalked hands slapping holds and shoes hooking on plastic. Despite being thousands of miles from home and surrounded by climbers speaking Portuguese, I felt a sense of belonging.
The climbing gym – a hub of connection – climbers of all skill levels shared beta, celebrated sends, and exchanged local spot recommendations. It was a powerful reminder that climbing transcends borders; the camaraderie I experienced in Portugal was no different from what I’d felt in my hometown gym.
Moving to Colorado
Fast-forward to a new chapter in Colorado, where I recently relocated. Moving to a new place is always a mix of excitement and uncertainty. You leave behind familiar faces and routines, and while the adventure is thrilling, it can also feel isolating. For me, a step to creating a sense of “home” was finding a climbing gym.
I reminded myself that no place is going to be Summit – I invested years of my life, time, and growth into nurturing relationships between those 4 walls. But, I knew I needed climbing in my life. I found a commercial gym… the Lifetime Fitness of Climbing Gyms. Again, I felt a sense of security and belonging. I haven’t necessarily found my belay bestie, but I have put myself out there. Everyone is welcoming, receptive, and willing to sit chalked up on the mats with you.
Home for the Holidays
This holiday season, I traveled back to visit family and made a point of heading to my hometown climbing gym. As soon as I walked in, the familiarity was the perfect gift to a long travel week. This place reminds me of a different chapter in my life and showcases just how much has changed.
There’s something deeply comforting about returning to a place where you can drive there with your eyes closed or remember where it all started – your love for climbing. Climbing gyms, commercial or not, are not always about climbing but rather the sense of community it provides you and the outlet that it fosters.
Why Community in the climbing world Matters
Climbing is often seen as an individual pursuit—your own strength, skill, and mental fortitude determine your success. But behind every climber is a network of people who help make it all possible. Your climbing partners catch your falls, push you to try harder, and celebrate your successes, no matter how big or small.
This sense of community is what makes climbing truly special. The community in the climbing world is a special thing. Whether you’re halfway across the world, settling into a new city, or revisiting old stomping grounds, the climbing world offers an open invitation to connect. All it takes is a simple “Hi” to the person belaying next to you or cheering on a climber at the gym. That’s the beauty of climbing—it’s never just about the send; it’s about the connections you make along the way.
So if you’re traveling, moving, or simply looking to expand your circle, start by finding a gym or crag. You’ll discover a network of like-minded people ready to welcome you, encourage you, and share in your passion for climbing.
Here’s to finding your people—wherever your climbing journey takes you! Embrace the community in the climbing world.
