What does it mean to Be Healthy; my 10 guidelines.

When it comes to living a healthy and fulfilling life, there isn’t a single magic formula. Instead, true wellness is built on a foundation of multiple interconnected pillars. These ten principles serve as a guide to help you prioritize what really matters for your health and happiness. To be healthy is more than eating well and working out. Here are the things I do to be healthy.

1. Eat Real Food (Know the Source)

Your body thrives on whole, unprocessed foods. Make an effort to eat real food—vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. Knowing where your food comes from is just as important. Whenever possible, choose locally sourced, organic, or sustainably produced options (such as hunting like KONA and I). By eating mindfully and with intention, you’re fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally.

2. Be Aware of Your Environment / Be Present

Your surroundings have a significant impact on your well-being. Take note of your environment, both physically and emotionally. Whether it’s reducing clutter, breathing in fresh air, or surrounding yourself with positive people, being aware allows you to make intentional choices. Equally important is staying present. Practicing mindfulness can reduce stress, improve focus, and increase your appreciation for the small joys in life.

3. Get Outside

Nature is a powerful healer. Spending time outside not only improves your physical health through exposure to sunlight (hello, Vitamin D!) but also boosts mental clarity and reduces stress. Whether it’s hiking, gardening, or simply enjoying a walk in the park, make outdoor activities a regular part of your routine.

4. Turn Off Your Phone Once in a While

Our phones connect us to the world but can also disconnect us from what’s happening right in front of us. Taking regular breaks from screens can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and deepen your relationships. Try designating tech-free times during your day to fully engage with your surroundings and loved ones.

5. MOVE Your Body

Movement is life. Whether it’s through exercise, stretching, or simply walking, keeping your body active is crucial for physical and mental health. Aim for a mix of strength training, cardio, flexibility, and mobility exercises. Remember, movement doesn’t have to be formal; dancing in your kitchen or playing with your kids counts too!

6. Friends, Family, Pets, Relationships

Human connection is essential for happiness and longevity. Invest time and energy in your relationships—with friends, family, pets, and your community. These connections provide emotional support, reduce stress, and bring joy into your life. Prioritize the people (and animals!) that make you feel loved and valued.

7. Rest and Recover (Sleep, Body Work, etc.)

Rest is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Prioritize quality sleep by establishing a consistent routine and creating a restful environment. Recovery also includes practices like sauna, massage, stretching, meditation, and anything that helps your body and mind recharge. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

8. Good Hygiene

Hygiene isn’t just about cleanliness; it’s a foundation for health. Regular habits like brushing your teeth, washing your hands, and maintaining personal cleanliness prevent illness and contribute to your overall well-being. Don’t forget about mental and emotional hygiene—practicing self-care and setting boundaries are equally important.

9. Dance, Laugh, and Smile

Joy is a cornerstone of health. Dancing, laughing, and smiling release endorphins, reduce stress, and improve your mood. Life is too short to take everything seriously. Find moments of fun and lightheartedness every day, whether it’s dancing to your favorite song, sharing a joke, or simply smiling at a stranger.

10. Be Curious and Open

Though not explicitly listed, underlying all these pillars is a mindset of curiosity and openness. Embrace life’s challenges and opportunities with a willingness to learn and grow. This mindset enhances your ability to adapt, find solutions, and maintain a positive outlook.

Putting It All Together to Be Healthy

Health is about balance. Each of these pillars works together to support your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you’re not just surviving—you’re thriving. Which of these pillars will you focus on first to be healthy?
