Let’s be real, travel is something people look forward to all year long. They store up their PTO, plan the vacation cruise, and tick off the days on the calendar. They book the all-inclusive Cabo vacation, eating and drinking like it’s their last day on Earth. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. DO IT, if you find that it fits in your lifestyle. But how do you travel with fitness as a priority?
However, for many of us, staying active and feeling good is part of enjoying the trip even more. You don’t need to skip the mojitos or miss out on trying new foods, but there’s a way to keep your body moving without compromising your vacation vibe.
How can you have both
First, pack like you put in some thought to your fitness – throw a resistance band in your bag and find a bodyweight workout to follow. A 20-minute workout can set a positive tone for the day, leaving you more energized to explore or relax.
The easiest way to incorporate movement is to explore on foot – set a step goal or make it a point to sightsee on foot. Walking is a simple yet effective way to stay active. It’s also a great excuse to bop into a local coffee shop and grab a pastry, too! Moderation is KEY.
Travel often leads to dehydration, especially on long flights or in tropical destinations. Always keep a water bottle handy. Proper hydration will help with energy levels and muscle recovery if you’re keeping up with your workouts.
Travel with Fitness
Lastly, don’t expect to hit PRs or stick to your strictest fitness regimen while traveling. The goal is to maintain consistency, keep your body moving, and feel good. It’s okay to have lighter workout days or just focus on Mobility and stretching. It’s about balance. The point of travel is to enjoy yourself, so find what works best for you. When you travel with fitness in mind you can still have fun and workout. Whether it’s daily mini-workouts, staying active through walking and exploring, or taking part in local fitness experiences, you’ll come back from your trip feeling refreshed and accomplished—without sacrificing all the hard work you put in before you left.
