Working with a personal trainer is a huge benefit year round. However the winter brings special circumstances that make reaching goals a little more difficult.
It’s easy to get stuck in a winter rut. Especially in Wisconsin where, let’s be honest, the winter can drag on. Shorter days, colder temperatures, and limited daylight can drain motivation fast, making it tempting to put goals on hold until spring. But winter doesn’t have to be a setback. In fact, working with a personal trainer during the colder months can be one of the most effective ways to stay consistent through the season and make progress along the way.
A Personal Trainer Provides Routine

Working with a personal trainer provides a much needed routine not only for your schedule but for your body. From a physical standpoint, routine allows your body to adapt and progress more efficiently. Having set training days and a structured plan takes the guesswork out of your workouts. Your sessions become a scheduled part of your week, which is especially helpful during the winter months when self motivation can dip and days can feel repetitive.
This can also be used as a time to zen out from other stressors in life. The time you get with a trainer is your time. An investment made for your future self.
A Personal Trainer Provides Accountability
I started working with Coach Kubi in January to help prepare for a long run I was planning that spring. I didn’t intentionally start in the winter, it’s just kind of how the schedule worked out. When I look back on it, I don’t know if I would have stayed as consistent with my training if I didn’t have the accountability of Coach Kubi.
I had a strength training session with him on Mondays. There was accountability for that specific workout, since I knew he was waiting on me. But the accountability bled over into the remainder of my workouts that week. I knew he would ask how I felt on my runs. So if I didn’t do those scheduled runs, what would I say? Self determination is incredibly necessary, but sometimes an outside source of motivation can really change the mindset to get things done.
The Winter Provides Time To Progress
Other than winter sports, there is not a whole lot going on in Wisconsin during the winter. For obvious reasons, most of the big races, hikes and climbs are in the summer. Working with a personal trainer in the winter gives you ample time to build a relationship, set a goal and make substantial progress and achievements prior to the deadline. A personal trainer helps you use this time intentionally by building strength, improving how your body moves, and addressing weaknesses that may otherwise get overlooked. Starting in the winter for a summer goal allows for enough time to make progress in a safe way.
