Outdoor Experiences in Wisconsin: An Interview with Forward Outdoor

At Summit Strength and Fitness, we’re always looking to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations that help people live healthier, more active lives. Collaborating with others allows us to learn, grow, and share valuable resources with our community. This month, I talked with the team behind Forward Outdoor, a company that provides outdoor experiences based in the Milwaukee area. Their mission is simple: help people reconnect with nature, movement, and each other through accessible outdoor adventures.

What Is Forward Outdoor?

Creating Opportunities to Reconnect with Nature

Forward Outdoor was founded by a husband-and-wife team, Kurt and Elizabeth, who share a deep love for hiking, camping, kayaking, and biking.

“When we had our daughter a few years ago and looked at the future she will be inheriting, it concerned us how disconnected we’ve become from both nature and each other as a society. We wanted to create something that not only gets people outside but helps connect people in person.”

Their goal is to remove barriers that often prevent people from spending time outdoors and make nature-based experiences accessible to everyone.

What Outdoor Experiences Does Forward Outdoor Offer?

Scenic Kayak Adventures on the Milwaukee River

One side of the business focuses on self-guided kayak trips along the Upper Milwaukee River.

“It amazes people that just 20 to 30 minutes from the skyscrapers of downtown Milwaukee, you can paddle through a nature preserve for hours and see bald eagles and great blue herons.” says Kurt.

These trips offer participants a peaceful escape into nature while remaining close to the city.

Paddle Boats, Hydro Bikes, and More on Lake Michigan

Recently, Forward Outdoor expanded by purchasing the paddle boat and hydro bike rental operation located at Discovery World in Milwaukee. Situated on a protected inlet next to Lakeshore State Park and the Summerfest grounds, visitors can enjoy stunning views of both Lake Michigan and Milwaukee’s skyline while exploring the water.

Available watercraft include:

  • Paddle boats
  • Hydro bikes
  • Kayaks
  • Stand-up paddleboards

A Simple and Beginner-Friendly Outdoor Experiences

Forward Outdoor’s mission is to make getting on the water as easy as possible.

For river kayak trips, participants:

  1. Reserve a time slot online.
  2. Meet at the designated park.
  3. Ride a shuttle upriver.
  4. Receive equipment and a brief orientation.
  5. Paddle back downstream at their own pace.

“Our river sections are scenic, beginner-friendly, and designed so people can simply enjoy being outside.”

At the Discovery World location, guests can simply arrive and choose from several different watercraft options without advanced planning.

What Is the Best Part of Owning Forward Outdoor?

Helping People Find Time for Outdoor Experiences

Kurt and Elizabeth say the most rewarding moments come from hearing how meaningful the experience was for participants.

“We often hear people say, ‘I really needed that.’ Life gets busy with work, family, and commitments. Many people don’t get outside because paddling requires equipment, transportation, and knowledge. We remove those barriers so people can simply show up and enjoy the experience.”

What Fitness Level is Needed for these Outdoor Experiences?

Outdoor Adventures for All Experience Levels

One of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor recreation is that it requires elite fitness. According to Forward Outdoor, all of their experiences are beginner-friendly.

“Our river trips typically last two to three hours, so participants need a moderate amount of paddling ability. Most people can simply enjoy the scenery and have fun. At the same time, if someone wants a workout, they can certainly get one, too.”

Outdoor Experiences Create Memories

Nature Helps Heal Relationships

When asked about their most memorable experience, one story immediately stood out.

After completing a river trip together, a mother and adult daughter shared how impactful the experience had been. The daughter explained that they had experienced a difficult relationship earlier in life, and spending uninterrupted time together on the water allowed them to reconnect in a meaningful way. The experience became more than a paddle trip, it became a step toward healing and rebuilding their relationship.

My Experience Kayaking with Forward Outdoor

I was recently able to experience on of the outdoor experiences offered by Forward Outdoor. For my birthday, my family did a 3 hour (approximately 7 miles) kayaking trip in Thiensville, WI. To sum up my experience: I would definitely recommend and I would definitely go again!

We started at an easy to find parking lot next to a recreational park in Thiensville. From there, we loaded up into Forward Outdoors van and took about a 10 minute car ride to the drop off location. During the car ride, the outdoor experience lead talked about the river path we would take and scenic opportunities to look out for. They also gave their personal phone number in case we had any issues or questions along the way.

Once we reached the drop off area, they had everything taken care of! They unloaded the kayaks and gave a lesson on proper body mechanics for kayaking. They provided pretty much everything I could think of; bug spray, sunscreen, dry bags, life jackets, etc.

Kayaking itself was exactly how I expected it. Comfortable kayaks, beautiful scenery and 3 hours devoted to time connecting with family in nature.

Getting out of the water is super easy with the kayak launch. Once you get out, you are done! Nothing to pack up or clean. You are able to go to your car and carryon.

Advice for Beginners Wanting to Explore Outdoor Experiences

Start with Preparation

For those who feel intimidated about getting outside, Forward Outdoor recommends learning the basics before heading out. “Know before you go.”

Simple preparation can make outdoor adventures safer and more enjoyable. This includes:

  • Checking weather forecasts
  • Understanding routes and maps
  • Bringing appropriate gear
  • Learning basic outdoor safety

They also encourage beginners to visit local outdoor retailers, where knowledgeable staff are often eager to help answer questions.

Find a Community

Another great way to build confidence is by connecting with others.

“There are many welcoming outdoor groups on Facebook, Meetup, and other community platforms that can help newcomers learn and gain confidence.”

Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Get Outside

The Benefits of Nature for Physical and Mental Health

If Forward Outdoor could leave readers with one message, it would be this: “Don’t wait.”

Spending time outdoors provides benefits that extend far beyond exercise. Fresh air, movement, natural surroundings, and meaningful experiences can improve both physical and mental well-being. Most importantly, it’s fun!

Whether you’re paddling down the Milwaukee River, exploring Lake Michigan, or simply taking your first step into outdoor recreation, there’s no better time to start than today.
